SISU Player of the Month: Ryan Hart

10 Mar 2016 by Brandon Sparks

March’s SISU Mouthguard Player of the Month, Ryan “Madden” Hart, has been an exciting player to watch in his first year of rugby here at the University of Michigan. Unlike most wings, Madden doesn’t run out of bounds often and instead opts to use his famous spin moves, high-light reel cuts and jukes to fake out defenders. This fleet-footed rugby player got the nickname “Madden” for making video-game like plays out on the pitch. We look forward to seeing what Madden can do in the future, the sky is the limit so let’s get to know this junior from sunny California.

Height: 5’8”
Weight: 200
Year: Junior
Major: Sport Management
Hometown: San Pedro, CA

Why Rugby?: My buddy from back home went to Fordham and played rugby there. When he came back home he would always tell me that I should try rugby because he thought I would be good at it. I never got around to try it, but when I came here and saw there was a rugby team, I thought this was a great time.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby the most so far?:The welcoming nature of all the members and coaches. I knew nothing about rugby before joining this club, but all my teammates and coaches were very understanding and patient with me and all the other new guys. It has truly been unlike any other team I have been a part of.

Most Memorable Moment on the Pitch?: My most memorable moment was the game against Minnesota’s academy side. I ended up winning back of the match, and I felt like that was the first time I was able to show everybody what I could bring to this club.

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice?: Scrimmaging would be the lazy answer, but… scrimmaging.

Least favorite?: Lots of people say fitness but I know this fat-back needs it, so I’d say maybe some of the rucking drills, I just like having the ball in my hands.

What other sports have you played?: Baseball was my childhood love, but I really got into soccer during high school.

In 5 years what do you see yourself doing?: If I am not in law school, I see myself working in soccer. Hopefully working in some capacity for US soccer or coaching.

What’re some embarrassing childhood memories you can share with us?: I can’t think of any at the moment, but I know there are definitely a few.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?: I really like walking through the courtyard where the law library is. It’s really quiet and peaceful.

Biggest Fear?: A moody Coach Sparks.

Favorite food/meal?: In the spirit of being at Michigan, I would have to say the pulled pork Reuben sandwich from Zingerman’s Deli.

Any gameday superstitions?: No, I am not really a superstitious person, I just try to stay out of my own head before a game.

Favorite superhero and why?: Batman since he’s a self-made superhero, plus the most recent Batman movies are by far the best superhero movies out there.

Best advice you’ve ever received?: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”- Michael Scott
