Michigan Releases Spring XVs Schedule

18 Feb 2016 by Brandon Sparks

The snow is almost gone which means we can get back to the business of rugby here in Ann Arbor. The Michigan Wolverines have been putting in nothing but hardwork since returning from their break in January and are primed to take on their ambitious Spring schedule.

They will open the Spring campaign by welcoming Oakland University to Mitchell Field and March 12 for a Southeast Michigan university showdown. The following week will see them make a trip to Cleveland, Ohio to face nationally ranked Wheeling Jesuits in a night game on the shores of Lake Eerie. The third week of March has the U of M men hosting the Michigan Collegiate Cup here in Ann Arbor. 11 of the 13 teams in Michigan have confirmed for this event and should be a great day of exciting rugby produced by the states rugby programs. Immediately following the MCC Michigan will welcome historic powerhouse Bowling Green to A2 for a showdown of Midwest elites. The season will conclude with the squad traveling to Jackson to test themselves against a newly established men’s program in the area.

Coach Brandon Sparks is very happy with the ambitious schedule for the Spring saying “These match-ups will be a great test for our emerging younger players who will be leading our fifteens campaign.” The team will be running two sides this Spring with a more experienced squad competing in the competitive 7s season (Schedule to be released shortly) which will allow the younger players to gain some experience that will help prepare them for the Fall season. Sparks added; “We ran a similar schedule last year and it allowed player like Tomer Chen, Nick Azzopardi, and Ron Marine to really get use to the college game. That experience for them paid dividends for the team as a whole with each of those players having a big part in our Fall 2015 season.”

The Wolverines will play their home games at Mitchell West on the new G3 Turf fields and all are welcome to attend. For more information please check the scheduling section.
